Apple has already begun work on 6G modems for iPhones

Apple is working on developing an in-house 6G modem, in addition to its ongoing work on a 5G modem. The company has faced technical challenges and underestimated the complexity of modem development, resulting in slow and overheating prototype chips. The release of the in-house modem is now expected to be pushed back until at least the end of 2025 or early 2026. Apple plans to test the new modem technology in Silicon Valley, but carrier trials are still years away. Qualcomm is also expected to supply some of Apple's modem chips in 2026.
